The control in the experiment is the the thing being compared to. The control does not have the added variables and therefore should not change and stands as a guideline. The control is often confused with the constant which is anything in the lab that remains the same on everything being tested. For example all of the water temperature would be the same, the amount of water would be the same, the environment would be the same, etc.
