It varied. Parents had absolute rights over their children until they grew up, and were expected to treat their parents with deference even then. Wives were expected to defer to their husbands in all things, a man had the right to beat his wife with a stick provided the stick was no thicker than his thumb (hence "rule of thumb") and provided he did not actually beat her so badly that she died. A wife who ran away from her husband could be brought before the church courts and although she might plead that she had run away from him because he used her cruelly, the husband might tell the court that he beat her only "to make her mend her ways". The court might well then order her to resume living with her husband, and you can imagine what revenge the husband might exact if she was dragged back to his home. If a woman was very lucky she might find herself married to a good, kind, gentle man, but romantic love was not considered necessary or even desirable in a marriage and any woman of social status had little or no say in whom she married, unless she was lucky. As stated in another answer, once she was widowed, she was able to pick and choose provided the king didn't intervene and order her to marry one of his followers (who might have an eye more on her property than on her person).

On the whole, women had very limited rights in the Elizabethan era, but they could learn a trade and earn a living. Princess Elizabeth, later Queen, was taught to cook by Ann of Cleves, her second stepmother, and later claimed that if she was turned out of the kingdom in her petticoat, she could earn her living anywhere in Europe as a cook.

In the medieval era and in Elizabethan times, women could learn their husband's trade and on his death could carry on his business as Master, sometimes even with Guild membership, taking on an apprentice as their husband would have done.

In the medieval period did the man have to ask the father for the hand of his daughters marriage?

In Medieval times yes, the man who wanted to marry a father's daughter had to ask for her hand in marriage and if the father rejected the young man then his daughter was not able to see him any longer. Also, in some countries if the father accepted the young man's proposal of his daughter's hand in marriage there would be a dowry (either money or property that the father gave the young man if the father was wealthy and if the father was poor then sometimes the dowry would simply be farm animals, etc.)

How can you get an image of Marie Van Brittan Brown?

I am the daughter of Marie Brown; and the only legitimate image, that I have seen of her on the internet; is the Times article, on the invention, with a picture of her and my father. The photo of a black woman on the internet is not my mother Marie Brown. The Times article in the 60's, showing her and my father are accurate.

Who was the first daughter mentioned in the Bible?

Sarai or Sarah was the first woman mentioned by name as the daughter of Terah He was also Abram or Abraham's father. They had different mothers. In ancient times, people married their brother's, sister's or other relatives. After a time, birth defects started showing up. That is why God gave them the Mosaic law or what many people call the Ten Commandments. Here is one: Leviticus 18:8-10: "The nakedness of your father's wife you must not lay bare. It is your father's nakedness. As for the nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father or the daughter of your mother, whether born in the same household or born outside it, you must not lay bare their nakedness. As for the nakedness of the daughter of your son or the daughter of your daughter, you must not lay bare their nakedness, because they are your nakedness." These laws would not have been necessary if the Israelites and the peoples around them weren't intermarrying.

Was Clarence John Laughlin the photographer ever married?

He married five times, the last time in the 1970s -- a remarriage to his second wife, Elizabeth, the mother of his two sons. He had a daughter by another wife. According to Meek, he was too work-obsessed to be much of a father. He married five times, the last time in the 1970s -- a remarriage to his second wife, Elizabeth, the mother of his two sons.
