Here's the basic myth: Apollo was bragging to Eros that his arrows were far more potent than the petty love arrows Eros had. Eros shot him with one, and he fell in love with a wood nymph. This wood nymph, Daphne,had been shot with a lead arrow, so she was to never fall in love. She was chased across the forest by Apollo. She cries "Father, help me!" and her father, who is Peneus, river god, turns her into a laurel tree. That is why Apollo uses the laurel tree for his symbol and his woven crown.
