The ending to the Outsiders is that Johnny, unfortunatly, died in the hospital after being fatally injured saving kids from the fire in the church he and Pony were sheltered by. Dally, caring for Johnny more than his life, was left hardbroken and cracked. Johnny's last words were 'Stay gold, Ponyboy' referring to the 'Nothing Gold Can Stay' poem earlier in the book. Dally flees the hospital, purposely robs a store to get police on his trail. Once the police catch up to him, he lets them shoot him, where he dies. It was more like a suicide than homicide. As for the rumble earlier, the Greasers win.
At the end, Dally is unable to comprehend the fact that Johnny is really dead. He goes on an emotional ride. First in the store where he robs the guy and starts running. He then calls Darry for help, but as he is running to them the police catch him. Darry pulls out a gun and the police shoot him until he stopped moving in front of the gang. His last words were Ponyboy.

The Outsiders movie and The Outsiders book are both alike and different in many ways. The movie adaptation was made in 1983. The book was first published in the 1967. One way is that the book starts off with Ponyboy leaving the movie theaters, while the movie starts off with him walking through town with Johny and Dally. Another is that the book is in first person point of view. The movie isn't narrated, so it is not in first person point of view. Also, in the book, Sodapop and Dally are supposed to be blonde, but in the movie they are both brunettes. In the movie, the church wasn't on a hill. In the book, the church was on the top of a hill in Windrixville. Even though the book and movie are different, they are alike in many ways as well. The movie has all of Pony's gang members, Soda, Darry, Johny, Dally, Two-bit, Steve, and Pony, just like the book. Both Dally and Johny die in both the movie and the book.
