It must have a charge. That is, gain or lose an electron from it's neutral state. H is a hydrogen atom. H+ is a hydrogen ion. Cl- is a chloride ion. (note the "ide" is often used to indicate a negative charge. H- is known as a hydride.)

An atom becomes an ion by gaining or losing electrons. If it gains electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion called an anion. If it loses electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion called a cation.

What must happen in order for an ion to form?

An ion forms when an atom gains or loses electrons to have a stable electron configuration. When an atom gains electrons, it forms a negatively charged ion (anion), and when it loses electrons, it forms a positively charged ion (cation).

Why must scientists use the concept of probability for the structure of an atom?

This is due to Heisenberg's principal of uncertainty.

What would hydrogens spectrum have to be to become a continuous spectrum?

In order for a hydrogen atom to have a continuous spectrum, the oscillation would have to be incoherent. In other words, there would be no fixed or steady state oscillation. In addition, the change in state of the oscillator would have to be incoherent. We know that the energy that is radiated from a hydrogen atom is due to changes in the energy states of the atom. Therefore, each of the states that the atom would have to reach must be perfectly random. This would produce a nearly continuous spectrum over a certain range in frequencies or wavelengths.

Is hclo linear?

No, HClO is bent in shape due to the lone pair on the central atom, leading to a deviation from linearity.

If an electron is added to a neutral atom the atom becomes what?

If an electron is added to a neutral atom, it becomes a negative ion (anion) with a net negative charge.

How many newtons of force will helium atom have?

The force experienced by a single helium atom will depend on the specific conditions in which it is placed. Generally, the force experienced by an atom is very small, on the order of nanoNewtons or picoNewtons, due to interactions with other atoms or fields.
