Both are used in comparison and contrast essays. Block involves describing one thing being compared/or contrasted, then describing the other thing being compared/contrasted. Point by point involves talking about the two items in regards for specific characteristics one point at a time. For example, you might discuss the size of object a and object b. Then you might move on to the color of object a and object b.

"Compared" has many different synonyms as it's a very generic term. Some examples include "contrasted", "analyzed", "contemplated", "divided", and "examined".
A historical analogy is a comparison between one historical event or situation and another. For example, the arrival in the Levant of a large number of immigrants who then take control of the government and marginalize the indigenous population, pushing it into "homelands" with limited economic value, might be compared to similar events in North America and South Africa.
