The Treaty of Tordesillas, in 1497, regulated the settlement of the Americas. A dividing line was marked on the charts and maps, to remind Portugal and Spain exactly where their zones of influence were to be in the New World. The line was just enough west to allow Brazil to be claimed, and colonized, by Portugal. Everything on the other side of the line was intended for Spain.
