Springfields are made in various countrys. Brazil, Hungary, Croatia, and the U.S. All springfield xds are made in Croatia. It would be nice if they were made in USA but sadly not many are today
The Springfield XD say Made In Croatia on them. answer #2.... My 1911A1 was made in the USA, in Ma., where most the company is based.
Springfield Armory was created in 1777.
Other than the obvious (location), the biggest difference I can think of is that Springfield imports and markets firearms from other makers.

Springfield Armory handguns will not be available in Massachusetts. The factory has said..."WE HAVE NO INTENTION OF GOING THROUGH THE MASSACHUSETTS CERTIFICATION PROCESS because the laws and regulations are not clear". Update 10/16/2009: We have heard that rumors that Springfield Armory is interested in getting some of their handguns certified for sale in MA. No. They are two different companies. Smith and Wesson is in Springfield Massachusetts, as was the original US Springfield Armory. The modern company known as Springfield Armory is Springfield, Inc., located in Illinois.
