It turns out to be a little more complicated than it seems. The definitions of continent are different for different cultures and nations. Most people in the US would say that the US and Canada are on the continent of North America. South America is a separate continent to the south of North America. Others throughout the world see North and South America as one basic land mass, America. On the other hand, many people separate Europe and Asia as distinct continents separated by the Ural Mountains. Others see Europe and Asia as one continental mass, Eurasia. It gets even more complicated than this, depending on where you are and how you see the world geographically and politically.
Many people equate 'America' with the US, and I find this of questionable value. All people living from the northernmost regions of Canada to the southern tip of South America are Americans. So, the question is a good one but requires any meaningful answers to include reasonable parameters.
