On the night of July 9, 1958 an earthquake along the Fairweather Fault in the Alaska Panhandle loosened about 40 million cubic yards (30.6 million cubic meters) of rock high above the northeastern shore of Lituya Bay. This mass of rock plunged from an altitude of approximately 3000 feet (914 meters) down into the waters of Gilbert Inlet (see map below). The impact generated a local tsunami that crashed against the southwest shoreline of Gilbert Inlet. The wave hit with such power that it swept completely over the spur of land that separates Gilbert Inlet from the main body of Lituya Bay. The wave then contiuned down the entire length of Lituya Bay, over La Chaussee Spit and into the Gulf of Alaska. The force of the wave removed all trees and vegetation from elevations as high as 1720 feet (524 meters) above sea level. Millions of trees were uprooted and swept away by the wave. This is the highest wave that has ever been known
The largest recorded tsunami occurred on 7 July 1958 at Lituya Bay, Alaska. This massive tsunami, generated by an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale, reached a height of 524 metres, or over half a kilometre, the equivalent of 1,720 feet or 40 feet short of a third of a mile
No one knows where the first tsunami occurred. There have been tsunamis since before there were people.Since the word "tsunami" is a Japanese word, the first such event that was called a tsunami was probably in Japan.

The two most famous (current) tsunamis are the 2011 Tohoku tsunami in Japan and the 2004 Boxing Day (Sumatra) tsunami. The greatest historical tsunami (a series of them) accompanied the explosion of Krakatoa in August, 1883.
The most destructive, though not the largest, tsunami ever recorded was the Boxing Day 2004 tsunami. The Sumatra-Andaman earthquake on 26 December 2004resulted in an earthquake with the magnitude of 9.3 occurring on the ocean floor near the west coast of Sumatra, perhaps the most devastating tsunami ever recorded, the height of the wave was only about 100 feet, far from the largest. Over 230,000 people were killed. The impact of this earthquake affected the time of the Earth's rotation time and It caused the entire planet to vibrate as much as 1 cm (0.4 inches).
