Turn your steering wheel to the left if you are driving on the right hand side of the road, such as in the US and most of Europe. If you drive on the left side of the road, such as in the UK or Japan, turn your steering wheel to the right. Either way you want the nose of your vehicle to lead you away from the curb if you were to accelerate.
Not sure if there is a 'rule' for this but based on physics I would guess to the right (assuming you are on the right side of the road). That way if your car moves down hill it will move into the curb and hopefully stop.

When parking uphill with a curb, turn your wheels away from the curb and set the parking brake. When parking uphill without a curb, turn your wheels towards the edge of the road or shoulder and use the parking brake. In a downhill area, you should always park with the front wheels toward the curb. The theory is that if the brakes malfunction, the car will move towards the curb and stop, instead of going downhill, gathering speed and causing an accident.
