If you were at the North Pole from about 22 March on you would start to see a faint glimmer of light on the horizon. This glimmer would increase every day, until after a couple of weeks you would see the entire huge red/orange ball of the Sun. Every day it will climb a little higher in the sky with 24-hour daylight. By about 22 June it will have reached its zenith, where it will appear to be about half-way between the horizon and over head. From that day on it will gradually recede toward the horizon until about 22 September when it will dip below the equator, leaving you to another long winter.

When the sun is not setting at the South Pole, Australia is experiencing Summer - just like lands in the northern hemisphere experience Summer when the sun is not setting at the North Pole.
During summer, the North Pole is pointed toward the Sun, During winter, the North Pole is pointed away from the Sun. The South Pole points in the opposite direction from the North Pole, so that when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it's winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Spring and fall follow this same pattern.
