The gospel authors were familiar with the Book of Isaiah and looked to it for inspiration when writing about the life and mission of Jesus. As a result, several passages in Isaiahare echoed or alluded to in one or other of the gospels.
There is a particularly significant reference to Isaiah 7:14 in Matthew 1:22-23, although it is important to note that this is not a reference to the original Hebrew scripture, but to the Greek Septuagint translation of the verse: "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." What Isaiah really wrote was "the young woman will conceive ..." but this is unhelpful for the story of Jesus, as is the name Immanuel.
