Republicans stand for self reliance and less government--EXCEPT when they need something like disaster relief--I'm talking to you Haley Barbour, Bobby Jindal, etc! Or when their corporate paymasters need bailed out by the taxpayer--see Goldman Sachs, Citi, Chase,etc.
Democrats are for a more equitable society. Unfortunately equal opportunities do not equal equal outcomes. Everyone has different abilities. Both parties are heavily compromised by their reliance on large contributors, lobbyists, and wealthy individuals. The differences between the two are often exaggerated with both playing inside a carefully prescribed field of action.
