Charlemagne won , took over the kingdom of the Lombards and became the king of the Lombards as well. The pope, as a reward, crowned him emperor. Charlemagne also tried to submit the Lombard duchy of Benevento (in southern Italy) to his vassalage, but did not succeed. He then suppressed another revolt in Aquitaine and conquered the southern side of the Pyrenees in Spain as a buffer against the Moors. Further expansion came with the Saxon Wars, where Charlemagne conquered northern Germany. Finally, he annexed the Duchy of Bavaria, which was previously a vassal duchy. Charlemagne also defended his empire in western Europe from attacks from eastern Europe by the Avars and the Slavs.
