There were more than 1 country which Hitler want to ally with. He allied with Italy, Japan and Austria. He wanted to ally with Britain the most.
Well, there were two alliances: triple entrente and the triple alliances. I think the reason between the triple entrente and the central powers may well be that the countries that signed an alliance in the triple entrente, could be central countries or have central empires.
Germany
Strategically the triple alliance had a very strong position because they were all linked by borders ,almost like a wall in between the triple entente, and could therefore, effectively cut off all communication between Russia, Britain and France. However because Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia -thereby immediately bringing Russia into the war- they could not put their strategic location into effect. Another large part in the beginning of the war was that Italy did not join in until May 1915 by which time the weight of numbers of the triple entente had given them a large advantage and so the triple alliance also started off the war by losing one ally and their strategic position.
Portugal is the England's oldest ally...both countries have an alliance which is still in force
Italy joined the alliance in a hurry in 1882 because of rivalry with France in Africa. However, as the question suggests, Italy's membership of the Triple Alliance did not make sense. Italy had claims on Austrian terrritory (Southern Tyrol, Trieste and various other parts of Austria's Adriatic coast).
Germany never left the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance was destroyed because Italy opted out of the agreement once World War I rolled around. After that, Germany's only ally was Austria-Hungary, as it had been before the Triple Alliance. This alliance is known as the Dual Alliance. Italy remained neutral when World War I broke out in 1914. However, the Italians had a secret military alliance with France ever since 1902, and France was a major enemy of Germany. So you could argue that the Triple Alliance actually crumbled in 1902, but was made public in 1914.
Italy left the Triple Alliance at the start of WWI because they were not prepared for the conflict but later joined the Triple Entente because they really wanted terroritory that currently belonged to their former ally Austria-Hungary
There was the Triple Alliance which Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy were a part of and the Triple Entente which Britain, France and Russia were a part of. Also, the USA helped the Triple Entente, supplying them with weaponry and armies. I studied this in history earlier this year, I hope this helps!:)

Austria-Hungary was not a particularly useful ally from Germany's point of view.
