The most famous eruption occurred in 79 AD. I think that is the one you're asking about. However, there were earlier eruptions that might be argued as more destruction. I think one in the bronze age wiped out more area.
Mount. vesuvius most deadliest eruption was in 79.AD , most famously know as "the pompeii eruption "
A "firestorm" of poisonous vapors and molten debris engulfed the surrounding area suffocating the inhabitants of the neighboring Roman resort cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Tons of falling debris filled the streets until nothing remained to be seen of the once thriving communities. The cities remained buried and undiscovered for almost 1700 years until excavation began in 1748. These excavations continue today and provide insight into life during the Roman Empire.

Mount Tambora on Sumbawa Islands in Indonesia. It errupted in 1815.
Mount Tambora is famous for the eruption is 1815-1816 which also made "The Year Without Summer" occur
The Avellino Pumice eruption occurred around 3945 years ago, dating back to approximately 1950 BCE. It was a significant volcanic event that originated from Mount Vesuvius in Italy, producing a large volume of pumice and volcanic ash.
In terms of eruptions in the states themselves, the largest eruption goes to the 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens. The largest eruption to occur on U.S. soil was the 1912 eruption of Novarupta in Alaska. This eruption was an order of magnitude larger than the Mount St Helens eruption, but at the time Alaska was not a state.

Destructive. Destructive means destroying and constructive means to make something. An earthquake is both destructive and constructive.
