Feudalism was a system of government where the King was deemed to own all the land and therefore wealth of a country and that land was then given as rewards to whoever the king chose, but they only held it - rented, borrowed - but did not own it. They were tenants, the king's tenants-in-chief. They could in turn have tenants and those tenants could have tenants. In this way the land of England was parcelled out. It began in England with the Conquest in 1066. William I granted land to his followers, totally changing the face of land holding in the country. All but two tenants-in-chief in 1086, the year of Domesday Book, were Norman, come with William to England. It was a system that worked in Normandy pre-1066.
