He became a German citizen in 1914 and remained in Berlin until 1933 when he renounced his citizenship for political reasons and emigrated to America to take the position of Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton. He became a United States citizen in 1940 and retired from his post in 1945.

Albert Einstein left Europe in October 1933 and had in mind to return the following spring after spending the winter in Princeton. In April 1934 he decided not to go back but still did not apply for American citizenship. This he did in May 1935 and the same year his family bought a house in Princeton. He became an American citizen in October 1940.
