King Henry the VIII established the Church of England in 1534 when parliament declared that the king was the supreme head of the church. He wanted to establish it because he wanted a divorce but the pope wouldn't grant it but if he was the head of the church he could grant it himself, he was also bankrupt and wanted to take the monasteries, gold and various other riches for himself. A few notes, Henry VIII created the Church of England, commonly known as the Anglican Church, NOT the Church IN England, that would have been the Catholic Church from very early up until he seized control of all the Churches from the Catholic Church. Also, Henry did not create the protestant church - there actually is no "protestant" church, there are, as of 2013 over 33,000 churches which can be called protestant and Henry only created the Anglican one of those.

Anglican Catholic was formed by Henry VIII in 1534.

The Church in Britain was brought to these Islands very early on . The latin Councils of the middle ages gave the,' Church in England,' Precedence, because of its early genesis.

It was known as the Church of the English as far back as 750 AD, give & take a year![Beda.] The term was used again in the Magna Carta, 1215 Ad and its use was carried on all through the middle ages. When the new Holy Roman Church went in to schism in 1570, they were called Roman and Anglican Catholics retained the old name,ANGLICAN. At no time has the religion been changed, by Henry or anyone else, many have tried, including protestants in the Wars of Religion 1641 / 60 AD. The religion of the Anglican Church for two thousand years has been rightly Catholic!

Henry the Eighth did not change the religion of England. He kept it Catholic as it had been for 1500 years. What he did do, and indeed most of his family with him, was to loot it. But this was nothing new in European Catholicism at that time. Henry was not the first or last monarch to turn abbeys and priories, or nunneries in to cash. The pope took money from the collections and profits of a Jubilee year to pay for a.'close relative's' attempts to enhance his lands and fortunes at his contemporaries expense!

What Henry did was to point out that the Bishop of Rome had no right to interfere in another bishop's see without prior permission. It might have been spite or frustration that caused the comment, but it brought England back to a more Orthodox understanding of Catholicism than it, or any other part of Catholic Europe held then or now. The Pope was ignoring, neigh deliberately flouting and breaking the canons of Nice! Henry did agree to a trial attempt for the vernacular to be used in liturgical matters and some experiments with the English bible but he was uncertain!

In 1534, King Henry VIII left the Catholic Church and established himself head of the new protestant Church of England.

The Supremacy Act of 1534 declared the king to be the supreme head of the church of England. This act, along with the Act for the Submission of the Clergy stands out as an attempt to consolidate the power of the monarchy. The Act of Succession even demanded that all adults had to swear an oath recognizing the annulment of Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine of Aragon.
