The American Psychiatric Association
In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. The American Psychological Association Council of Representatives followed in 1975. Thereafter other major mental health organizations followed and it was finally declassified by the World Health Organization in 1990.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is typically cited in text by including the author (American Psychiatric Association) and year (2013) of publication, for example: (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
Homosexuality was classified as a mental illness until 1973, when the American Psychiatric Association removed it from its list of mental disorders. This change in classification was a significant milestone in the recognition and acceptance of homosexuality as a normal and natural variation of human sexuality.
Washington, DC
In MLA format, you can cite the DSM-5 (not DSM-V) by following this structure: Author(s). Title of the book (italicized). Publisher, year. For example: American Psychiatric Association. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (italicized). American Psychiatric Association, 2013.
Washington, DC
"Cure" suggests homosexuality is a disease or an illness. This is very far from the truth. In 1974 the American Psychiatric Association eventually stated that homosexuality was no longer considered a "disorder", but millions of gay men and women all over the world already knew that. They knew that they were naturally gay, that was what they were. There was no changing. So nobody cured homosexuality.
