Unable to see because of the red helmet he wore, he tripped and fell into a vat of chemical while attempting to outrun Batman. The chemical's drove him insane and bleached his skin, and he then became the Joker. As the Joker, he attempted to poison Gotham City's water supply and has held the city hostage on many occasions. He is responsible for the deaths of countless people, including Jason Todd, the second Robin. He also shot Barbara Gordon (the first batgirl) in the spine, leaving her paraplegic.
