Juan Carlos I became King of Spain on the 22nd of November 1975 till present day by a proclamation of Francisco Franco before his death. Juan Carlos I was affirmed King by the Spanish Constitution of 1978.

He is not the political leader of Spain, that would be the Presidente del Gobierno (President of the Government).

Juan Carlos I is the Chief of State, which is mostly a ceremonial position similar to Elisabeth II of the United Kingdom, and Commander-in Chief of the Armed Forces.

He helped Spain with the change from a Dictatorship to democracy with a parliament.
