Looking at the fan from the front you would turn it counter clock wise to remove it. You will probably need to hold the pulley from turning also.
the fan has left hand tread.try turn it in a clockwise direction to remove it
There is a special tool that is required to change the pulley. The tool screws into the the threads on the pulley and then when you turn the center of the tool with a wrench, it pushed the pulley from the compressor. The tool also comes with an adapter to press the new pulley in place.
The power steering pulley requires a special puller to remove and install the pulley. Many auto parts stores will sell or rent you the proper tool. Any attempt to remove the pulley without the special tools will probably damage the pulley and or the pump.
You will need to buy or rent or borrow a power steering pulley puller. Trying to remove and replace the pulley without the correct puller will surely damage the pulley and or the pump.
You need to remove the pulley from the pump to access the bolts that hold it to the bracket. A special puller is needed to remove the pulley and press it back on without damage to the pump or pulley. Most auto parts stores will rent you the tool to do the job correctly.
Find the idler tensioner pulley and retract it. You then will be able to easily remove and replace the belt.
Tensioner pulley below the alternator. Should be a 14 or 15mm socket and turn counter-clockwise.
Locate the crank sensor behind the vibration damper (crankshaft pulley). Unplug the wire harness connected to it. Remove the small bolt holding the sensor in place. Remove the sensor.
I have the same issue: 1995 S10 4.3L engine. Both the service manual and Haynes manual say to just remove the bolts, but it defies the laws of physics because the bolts can't come out past the pulley. Anyone??
To give yourself some elbow room, remove the fan/clutch assembly along with the fan shroud. Note, the water pump is not behind the fan pulley as you would normally expect. Remove the accessory belt. Remove the water pump pulley. Drain off the radiator coolant into a clean container. Remove the water pump. Install in reverse order.
It is a idler pulley.
The fan clutch and pulley are attached to it.
