The Arcediano dam project has been blocked since December of 2009 due to criticism by diverse groups including academics, researchers and members of civil society organizations. Critiques have focused on the selection process for the project, the analysis of water quality, the cost of the project and the lack of information regarding the proposed process for purification of the water.

As for the Lake Chapala, during last two years, the water level has been higher than it had been for decades. Although it is still subject to agricultural, domestic, and industrial sources of contamination, the actual levels of hazardous materials has not been assessed with regularity. Latest reports confirm there has been found elevated concentrations of Mercury in fish in the lake. However, neither the extent of human mercury exposure nor its sources and routes have been elucidated.
