I've just found the answer on a site called www.unc.edu. It's a tola. The value of a tola varied from one region of India and South Asia to another, but its official size in British India was 180 grains. (Apparently there are 80 tolas in a seer and 3200 in a maund!)

(I'm guessing that the questioner and I were trying to solve the same crossword!)
