Who owns the Winchester firearms trade name Olin or FN?

The ancestor of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company was the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. It was later reorganized into the New Haven Arms Company, its largest stockholder being Oliver Winchester. After the American Civil War, Oliver Winchester renamed the company the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Winchester Repeating Arms Company went into receivership in 1931, and was bought at bankruptcy auction by the Olin family's Western Cartridge Company. Oliver Winchester's firm would maintain a nominal existence until 1935, when Western Cartridge merged with its subsidiary to form Winchester-Western Company; in 1944 the firearms and ammunition operations would be reorganized as the Winchester-Western Division of Olin Industries. In 1980 the plant was sold to its employees, incorporated as the U.S. Repeating Arms Company (USRAC), together with a license to make Winchester arms. Production of ammunition and cartridge components under the Winchester Ammunition Inc. name was retained by Olin, not licensed to USRAC. From 1981 until 2006, Winchester guns were made by the USRAC. When USRAC went bankrupt in 1989 it was acquired by a French holding company, then sold to an arms making cartel sponsored by the Belgian Herstal Group, which also owns gun makers Fabrique National (FN) and Browning.

What was the first Winchester repeater rifle?

The great-grandaddy of the Winchester lever action rifle was the Volcanic pistol, developed by Smith and Wesson. Oliver Winchester began buying stock in The Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in 1855. The company name became the New Haven Arms Company in 1857 after both Smith and Wesson dropped their share of the ownership. In 1860 production of the Henry Rifle began. This is usually considered the first Winchester. I don't know exactly when the company became Winchester Repeating Arms, but the first gun to actually carry the Winchester name was the Model 1866.

When did oliver Winchester start making rifles?

Oliver Fisher Winchester acquired Smith & Wesson company which at that time was better known as the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in June 1850. He then relocated the company to New Haven, Connecticut. He renamed the company New Haven Arms. He had a engineer named Benjamin Henry who redesigned the rifles they were producing. Benjamin Henry and Oliver Winchester came up with the "Henry Repeating Rifle" that was a .44 caliber rimfire(meaning the cartridge was struck on the rim by the firing pin). The patent was put in Henry's name on October 16, 1860. The company was then renamed the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The first rifles made by the company with this name were the model 1866.
