There is a pin switch with a bad electrical contact. Usually on the driver's door, since it is the most used. To test, just squirt a little WD-40 on it and work it in, if the lights work as they should for awhile - there you have it. Replace the switch for a more permanent solution.
Perhaps you turned on the interior lights when you were adjusting the headlights?
Check to see if the interior lights are switched "ON" Sometimes they get turned on when you move the headlight switch.

There is a knob on your dashboard that you can turn to set the brightness of your dash lights and interior lights. If you have this knob turned all the way down, the interior light will not come on when you open the doors, and your dashboard lights will be dark. You probably turned them on by accident. They are controlled with the same pull switch that turns on the headlights. By twisting the switch to the far left it will click and the dome lights will turn on, by twisting it to the right it will turn off the interior lights and will then dim the dashboard lights.
In a 1997 Lincoln Continental : To the right of your headlight switch in the dash is a ( panel dim ) switch I believe if that is turned all the way up then the interior lights will come on
First thing you want to check is the dimmer switch to see if it is turned all the way down.

On your light switch there is a dimmer for the dash lights . if you turn it all the way to the left your interior lights should come on , turn it to the left and see if that works otherwise it might be a door switch .
