Smokey is a cartoon character, of course, but the living symbol of Smokey Bear was in fact an orphaned American Black bear (Ursus americanus) cub found in 1950 as a result of the devastating springtime Capitan Gap wildfire in the Lincoln National Forest near Taos, New Mexico.
Originally named 'Hotfoot Teddy', he was soon hustled off to the National Zoo (with a name-change) in Washington, DC, where he became so popular that the US Postal Service gave him his own ZIP Code! (20252)
After a lifetime of public service regarding the protection of his forest friends' homes, his remains were buried at the Lincoln National Forest.
Black bears in the eastern US are indeed black, and the black-colored coat seems to predominate in moist areas. But in the central part of the country they begin to lighten up to shades of brown, even cinnamon-colored, blond, and white. Only fifty percent of Black bears in the Rocky Mountains are black. A blue-tinged variant occurs along coastal Alaska and British Columbia, Canada.
Please see the 'Kermode bear' link below regarding the white-colored 'Spirit' black bear, Ursus americanus kermodei.
