The one going out of the wall or floor goes to the septic. The one going up is the vent that should go out the roof.

What is the pitch on a septic tank line going from the toilet drain down to the septic tank line?

Ideally 1/4" per foot minimum

What does it cost to replace a septic system?

Depends on the size of the system and what exactly you are going to replace. In many areas now, you must have an 'engineered' system of tanks, pumps and a field. This can cost 20-25,000 dollars to build. For a better answer you must be more specific as to what exactly you wish to replace.

How do you stop water from going in to the basement?

Make sure you have gutters on the house and lead the water far enough away from the house. Make sure the ground around the house slopes away from the house. If you still get water in your basement it is caused by hydrostatic pressure. The water on the outside of the wall builds up until the hydrostatic pressure is great enough and the water then seeps through the block or enters where the floor and wall meet. This can be solved by using an above floor baseboard system to drain the water to a sump pump or drain. Waterproof.com has an above floor basement waterproofing system that you can install yourself for around $4 per foot.

When you find the end of your field lines and start backtracking to find septic tank to see if full about how long of footege?

Every system is going to be different based on location and soil type. If I were trying to find the septic tank, I would draw a line straight out from the house closest to the bathroom and another at 90 degrees stoward the lateral lines. Where the lines cross should be close. Depending on how deep the tank is, there may be darker grass or a dead spot depending on weather, rainfall or the lack of.

I have a clay sewer pipe running from the main line in the basement floor. It is all cracked and doesn't appear to be in use. What could have been the purpose of this pipe and can it be removed?

This may be an old sewer system probably going to a septic drain field. Before you discard this be sure you have a working potty draining system.

What sewage system is better - a septic field system or a composting toilet system?

This depends on the useage of either system. If you are going to be using it a lot and for a prolonged period of time, the the better option would be a septic tank system. Otherwise if you will be using it for a short period of time, for example, for just the weekend, then a compositing system would be better,

Is yeast good for septic tanks?

Yeast works on sugars. There are seldom much in the way of sugars in a septic tank. It wouldn't hurt, but it isn't going to do much either.

Is basement excavation very costly?

Depending on your location and how big your basement is going to be will depend on how costly it is for a basement excavation.

Where on the septic tank do you install a septic tank vent?

The "septic system vent" you are referring to is not actually attached to the "tank" (that would be the buried, holding chamber in your yard) at all. It is attached to the plumbing in the residence before the septic system. If you look at the HowStuffWorks page, you will find a diagram showing where/how the vent works. Due to the way the septic tank produces gases, caused by the breaking up of the bacteria in the tank. Filters and drain traps are put into the houses plumbing system that is designed to hold water in the lower loop and block the gases from flowing back into the house. Most houses on a septic system will have the vent pipe(s) on the roof of the house and this is where these gases are released, rather than going back into the house. Now obviously, if you have gases coming into your house, you got a problem and should definitely consult a plumber

What if the house is on the lake?

How do you make a septic system stop smelling bad?

It depends on what is going on with the system. If it is operating normally and you are getting an odor out of the roof vent there are filters available that can reduce the odor. If your system is failing IE. foul smelling water coming up out of the ground call in a septic service professional. If you are getting sewerage odors in the house you should not be as they should be prevented from getting into the house by traps on each fixture in this case call a plumber.

What is the problem with going in the basement during a hurricane?

The greatest danger in a hurricane is not wind, but flooding. Most of the people who die in hurricanes drown. By going to your basement you increase your risk of drowning.

Flushing toilets all over the house causes floor drain in basement to overflow with sludge and water we have a septic tank that just got emptied last month help?

If the tank was full, the line going to it may have backed up and needs to be cleaned. If it worked for the last month and is now backing up, the lateral field may be full which means the tank cannot drain. Pull the lid on the septic and see if it is full again.
