The country of Australia expands beyond the continental surface land mass of Australia and includes the island state of Tasmania and many smaller island territories including Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, The Cocos Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Island.

The continent of Australia does not include New Zealand or New Guinea, despite this popular misconception. Australia is part of the larger regions known as Australasia and Oceania, but it is not the same as either. Australia is not synonymous with Oceania (another misconception).
