The Buddha rejected any notion of a supreme or creator God as outside of his intent to help people cope with suffering in this world. He believed that any vereration or worship of a Supreme God, is just another form of attachment that leads to suffering since we would be hoping and praying for this unseen deity to help us instead of us relying upon ourselves.
Answer:
Atheist means "no god" so Buddhiss are more non-theist. There is nothing in Buddhist practice or belief that requires the presence of a deity or sees any benefit from the denial of the existence of a deity. It just doesn't matter. Wasting time thinking about gods (an effort that will not have any resolution) is basically seen as a waste of time as your efforts can be better spent learning to live according to the Eightfold Path. As an aside, the presence of a deity in the Universe will not help or hinder your acheivement of enlightenment.
According to some, Buddhism is only lumped in with religion because the Western culture can't understand that a philosophical and moral framework can exist without any more than the good intent and understanding of its members. The spiritual part of Buddhism comes with the concept of life after death, but even then the Western concept of "soul" isn't a 100% match.
The difference between Atheism and non-theism is subtle. Atheists either lack belief in gods or have arrived at the conclusion that there are no gods. Buddhism is a non-theism, they have no need for gods and no time is wasted thinking about the issue.
