It extended so far on both sides of the Missouri line that both sides claimed it.
If it had been divided into North and South California, the war might have been avoided.
In the end, it was admitted to the Union as a free state - in exchange for certain concessions to the South in the Compromise of 1850. This agreement did not last, and the argument heated up steadily through the 50's, ending in war.
