Roman Catholic AnswerYes, Christmas has been a holy day of Obligation for centuries. One must attend Mass and rest from servile labor on Holy Days of Obligation, just as on Sundays - there is no difference in the Church's view between one and the other. It's interesting as it is one "holiday" that the puritans sought to suppress completely, and the people would have nothing to do with suppressing Christmas. Of course now, our culture has effectively suppressed it by turning it into a "holiday" instead of a Holy Day, and celebrating it all through Advent while Christmas actually lasts about twelve days. The second day of Christmas, though, the secular world has already turned to New Years and Valentine's Day. So the modern culture has accomplished what the early protestants never could.
