It is a donkey and the now-famous Democratic donkey was first associated with Democrat Andrew Jackson's 1828 presidential campaign. His opponents called him a jackass (a donkey), and Jackson decided to use the image of the strong-willed animal on his campaign posters. Later, cartoonist Thomas Nast used the Democratic donkey in newspaper cartoons and made the symbol famous.

Thedonkey symbol of the Democratic party dates back to Andrew Jackson, because people called him the slang word for donkey. It was not until a cartoonist drew the donkey symbol forHarper's Weekly(a popular magazine)in 1870 that the term and image really took hold. In most of the images, the donkey's legs are red, it's top half blue with stars, to illustrate the US Flag.

You failed to mention whether you are the younger guy or the cougar. But assuming that you are the cougar, the answer is; Yes, some young men like older women. The reason for this has to do with a lesser known internal image set known as a man's Anima. The Anima is the result of the existence of a minority of the chromosomes that code for the opposite sex (female) in every man's genetic makeup. This minority defines the woman that a man would have been if he had not become male. (we all start out as female in the womb) As the "woman that could have been" the Anima has an appearance (in the case you're interested in, the Anima is an older woman). This Anima presents an idealized image of desirability within the man's unconscious and this idealized image is often projected onto a real woman. Hence, the attraction some younger men (myself included) feel toward older women.
