This girl name has other spellings like Alia and Aaliyah. It's boy version is "Ali". It is an Arabic name but is also used in Asian and African cultures. But I would not be surprised to find this name being used in Spain and Eastern Europe due to the Muslim influences in the past.

In Islam, any name can be used as along as it has a good and beautiful meaning. There are citings from Hadiths where the Prophet (saws) had changed names with bad meanings into beautiful ones.

Queen Alia of Jordan was the third wife of King Hussein of Jordan, the ruler of Jordan from 1952 to 99. Queen Alia died in a helicopter crash in Amman, the capital city of Jordan. Consequently, the main airport of Amman was renamed after her.

Royal Jordanian Airlines was originally named Alia Airlines after the King Hussein of Jordan's eldest daughter, Alia, from his first marriage.

It means Moonlight in Turkish and Oak Tree in Hebrew??- found in someone's post, not too sure if they are right, though.

The name Elijah also occured in The Bible in John 1:21. There were some priests and Levites who asked John who he was. "Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; and he confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he saith, I am not. Art thou the Prophet? And he answered, No."

It is clear that Jews were not only waiting for Jesus but also a man called Elijah and a Prophet who was like him. Both of them were important for them and they had heard about them from old Prophets of God.

In Christianity Jesus is not a Prophet and no on is like him too. So it must be someone after Jesus. Because these two personalities were most important for God messengers. And both were like each other but one was prophet and the other wasn't a prophet. We do not know name of Prophet in the verse but name of his witness is Elijah. Elijah is actually name of Ali who is leader of Muslims after the last Prophet (peace be up on him and family). And this Elijah and Prophet should come before last day. It means the Prophet should be the last Prophet, and he will come with final testament.

The Holy Prophet Muhammed (S) said: "O Ali! You hold in relation to me the same position, as Harun held in relation to Moses except that there will be no Prophet after me."
