It is a misdemeanor within the city of Fresno as it is in most Incorporated towns and cities. For the most part it is legal to target practice on government land away from camping, picnic sites, etc.

Air guns vary a great deal from guns designed for 10 meter target shooting to powerful and very loud large bore guns used for game hunting.

A pellet trap backed by a 3/4' sheet of plywood for a stop is usually adequate for the low powered target guns. These guns tend to be very accurate and not very loud. Many people set up indoor/garage shooting ranges for these.

Good chance you can get away with shooting these outdoors if you take adequate precautions.

These guns can range at the low end from a Daisy Target Pro and Crosman 2240 to an Olympic competition gun costing several thousands of dollars.

Magnum class air guns, useful for hunting are generally loud and may invoke complaining neighbors in residential areas. If you don't upset your neighbors it is unlikely you will have any problems.
