No, Iran is a first world country, among the top 20 richest in the world (having the 18th largest economy in 2010). Iran is fully self-sufficient in production of automobiles and heavy trucks (the two main car companies, Iran Khodro and SAIPA motors, producing 1,000,000 automobiles in 2009, and being exported to countries such as Turkey, Russia, and Saudi Arabia), military equiptment, appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators and such. Iran has many industries, such as the oil industry, refining gasoline, petrochemicals, consumer goods/appliances, military hardware, and construction and shipbuilding, and many others. Iran's non-oil exports continue to increase every year.

However, due to being enemies with the West, they are often portrayed as being a third world country, filled with barbaric savages.
