I recently saw a photograph of his mother on MSNBC. I was taken aback because she seemed clearly to be a light-skinned black woman and I had never heard anyone mention that. Then, I found pictures of his sisters on the internet, who also look like their mother. One sister, married to a white man, has biological children who look like light-skinned blacks.
Even if there is no concrete evidence yet, I think this family has black roots somewhere in their history. I say this as someone who is African American who has people in my ancestry who "passed" for white in the early 20th century to escape racism.
He is probably mixed race but he identifies as African American. It is unlikely that he has 100% Sub-Saharn ancestry.
