No. The gospels say that John the Baptist baptised Jesus. The first-century Jewish historian Josephus says that John was executed in 35 CE, which is long before any of the New Testament books were written.

The author of the Book of Revelations is commonly known as "John of Patmos" because of his introduction in the Book. However, many Christians believe him to be the author of John's Gospel, in spite of the style and theological differences.

Another answer from our community:

No. The author of The Gospel According to St. John, 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John in the New Testament is John the Beloved, one of the original Twelve Apostles under the authority of Jesus Christ.

John the disciple of Christ was the brother of James and the son of Zebedee. He was one of the "Sons of Thunder", and he was also the disciple who went on to be imprisoned on the island of Patmos, where he received the Revelation that makes up the final book of The Bible.

John the Baptist was beheaded before Christ was crucified, and before the writing of the Greek Scriptures started.

However, it is believed by some in the eastern churches, that John the Apostle wrote a compilation of John the Baptist's writings. It is said that John the slave of verse 2 is a reference to John the Baptist and not to John the apostle himself. According to this view, John the apostle would have written the first chapters including the letters to the congregations and used by John The Apostle as an introduction to the book of Revelation. The part revealed directly to John The Apostle would start on chapter 4 and end on chapter 22.

This is not an absurdity if one compares the wording used by John the Baptist when quoted by the very same John the Apostle in his Gospel, i.e., "the Lamb of God."

The Armaic version of the book of revelation, says in verse 2: "2. Who testified to the Manifestation of God, and the testimony of, Jesus Christ, everything that he saw."

This is in every aspect in accordance to the description of Jesus in the gospel of John, where Jesus is called the "Word" of God.

According to this view, it becomes implied that Jesus gave this revelation to John while still on earth and that was preserved by John the Apostle and delivered when it was time to do so.

Moreover, John the apostle was a disciple of John the Baptist before he went with Jesus Christ, for the apostles were chosen right after John the Baptist baptized Christ, and the Gospel of John testifies that were chosen from among his disciples.

Another interesting point is that Jesus declared John the baptist greater than any other prophet before him, and therefore put him in higher rank than Elijah and Moses. How could this be if he hadn't been given any revelation?

The truth of the fact is that he was given the ultimate revelation, which was kept by his disciple the apostle John, until Jesus let him release it through the book of Revelation.

John the Apostle is regarded by many as the author of Revelation. The John named appears to have significant standing in the churches among whom the book would circulate. John the Apostle certainly fits that description. Also, there is the absence of any tile used to distinguish this John from the well known John of the other books. The practise of the day was to distinguish authors with the same name by a descriptive title such as 'John the less' for example.

The book was known from the earliest times among the churches to have been written by the apostle John.

While the book differs in being prophetic rather than historic, the hallmarks of the apostle's writings are evident - the vocabulary and themes used are similar to those in the other books of John. In addition the writer was in the vicinity of Apostle John's location later in life.

A:Neither John the Baptist nor the disciple John wrote the Book of Revelation, although it is signed by a person named John. There is no reason to believe that it was not written by a person of that name, or at least that a person called John wrote the last layer of a book probably developed by several authors over a long period, but we do not know who this person really was.

During the second century, after it was decided that John the Apostle must have been the author of the Gospel now known as John's Gospel, the similaritiy of names led the Church Fathers to decide that the two authors were actually the same person. Others, realising that the style and theology of Revelation are entirely different from those of John's Gospel, disagree and attribute Revelation to an otherwise unknown 'John of Patmos'.

Additional Answer:

Though the author of Revelation refers to himself only as John, his stand for the 'Word of God' and for the testimony of Jesus Christ (Revelation 1:9) caused him to be exiled to Patmos - a small island about 60 miles southwest of Ephesus in the Aegean Sea - which the Apostle John was associated with.

The author writes with prophetic authority with many allusions to the Old Testament and other established Jewish literature. This suggests he was a Jew himself. There are also striking parallels between the Gospel of John and Revelation, making it extremely likely that both books were written by the same author. Justin Martyr agreed in the 2nd century A.D.. But a bishop of Alexandria called Dionysius believed there were differences in the styles, language and thought and therefore thought it another writer - called John the Elder by him.

After all this time (late first century to now), the external evidence of history still strongly supports John, the son of Zebedee, one of the fiery sons of thunder (Mark 3:17), as God's inspired writer of the Revelation of Jesus Christ from His Father.

Another additional AnswerThe Book of Revelation was written by the Apostle John, and it could not have been written by John the Baptist as he was long since dead.

The Gospel of John, like all the New Testament gospels, was originally anonymous. It was attributed later in the second century to the apostle John, son of Zebedee, largely because it was decided that the 'disciple whom Jesus loved' (mentioned only in this gospel) must have been the apostle John. It was thought that the hitherto unknown author must have been the unknown disciple, thus making the connection.

Modern biblical scholars dispute the assumptions made in attributing this Gospel to the apostle John, saying that the book could not have been written by an eyewitness to the events described. Thus we do not know who wrote the fourth gospel, which continues to be called John's Gospel, but it is not possible that the author was John the Baptist.

How did John the author of the book of Revelation in the Holy Bible die?

Answer John was the only Apostle to die a natural death. He was exiled on the Isle of Patmos while writing the Revelation, and was later released at which time he wrote his three epistles. Historical documents indicate that John lived well into his 90's - thus living through the death of all the apostles, including Paul. Is John in the Book of Revelation the same as John the brother of James?

A:We know nothing about the author of the Book of Revelations, who is commonly known as "John of Patmos" because of his introduction in the Book. However, many Christians believe him to be the author of John's Gospel, in spite of the style and theological differences. If the apostle John, brother of James, was the author of John's Gospel (which many New Testament scholars doubt), then he could not have been the author of Revelation.
