Majorca is near Spain and is very sunny most of the year.

Majorca is a small island just off the south east coast of Spain. It is part of the Balearic Islands. Majorca is the largest island in the group, with Formentera as the smallest inhabited island in the group. Formentera is widely known because it permits nude sunbathing on most of its beaches. It is approximately 310 miles/ 200Km from the main city, Palma, to Madrid, capital of Spain. It is in the Balearic Sea which is in the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Sea is a sea which is almost completely enclosed by land. The island is approximately 3640Km2.

Majorca is also known of as Mallorca. The main language is officially Spanish but many speak Catalan. The official currency is the euro. The main religion is Catholic. There was a population of one million, seventy one thousand, and two hundred and twenty one people in 2008.

Majorca is a very popular holiday destination, infact it is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, because it is very scenic with its clean sandy beaches and attractive hills. The main vegetation consists of trees, Canvet and the Cesquera plants, which were originally used on the island for many things including feed for the livestock. There is an amazing climate as it is mainly sunny.

The island shows the effects of tourism very clearly. These disadvantages and problems include Pollution of the sea that's caused by tourists throwing rubbish in it. Also loss of farmland to hotels, the rising tourist numbers mean more hotels must be built and Small villages have become congested due to a huge increase of vehicle numbers.

Majorca is doing many things to reduce the impact of tourism. Lots of hotels were built in the tourist boom and they were rushed and therefore they were very ugly. To make this better they are knocking down the ugly buildings and building new ones with higher standards. Yet it costs more money and therefore the citizens of Majorca will have to pay more tax to pay for it. There was a huge increase of vehicles on the road due to the rising number of tourists and therefore small villages became congested. Cycling is now promoted as the best way to see the island. Yet many don't bother as its too much effort.

Lots of farmland has been lost to golf courses and buildings. To prevent this, the councils are now creating nature reserves and much of the island is protected preventing building works. This is disagreed with as it means that it is harder to keep up with the rising demand of more hotels due to the rising number of tourists. The sea and beaches became polluted by discarded sewerage and rubbish. To prevent this happening further there is now a tighter control on waste disposal. Some people may disagree with these solutions.

There are also many advantages of tourism. These include extra jobs and more money brought in. Without tourism, Majorca would struggle to sustain itself and may possibly become bankrupt.
