Although the story may hold some truth, much of it is clearly fiction. Most likely there was a catastrophic flood in a relatively localized region which someone managed to survive. However, over time as the tale was retold down the generations extraordinary details were added in as the whole event was exaggerated.
A number of Biblical scholars believe that the story of Noah as it appears in Genesis was actually compiled from either two separate stories or two different accounts.
