He defeated the gorgon Medusa, with the aid of Hermes' winged sandals, Hades' helm of darkness, an adamantine sword from Zeus and a polished shield from Athena, cutting off her head. He presented it as a gift to Athena after using it to slay the Cetus (a sea beast sent by Poseidon), rescuing Andromeda (who he married), and to rescue his mother. He later fulfilled a prophecy by accidentally killing his mother's father.

He is the first of the Greek demigod Heroes and is considered the progenitor of the Classical Greek race (it is from his mother that a common term for Greeks (Danaans) derives.
