Not any more dangerous than other major Metro areas in the US. I live Downtown/Channelside/Port of Tampa and I walk the dog at 1 AM and never experience anything bad. Downtown is thriving in terms of rentals and condos, people are moving back into the city which is great. Tampa's crime rate has plummeted 46 percent in the past six years, a decrease not seen since the 1970s, Mayor Pam Iorio announced recently.
Jacksonville, Miami, West Palm, Tallahassee, Orlando... all of these FL cities have higher crime rates than Tampa. Important to note, though, that almost all major Florida cities fall on the "higher" side of national crime rate rankings. Google '2008 city crime rankings' and you'll find tons of data on it. Just be sure to know what they are ranking on, etc.,
