Personal Opinion Response:
That's an excellent question.
In my opinion, when a neurotypical actor is hired to play someone with an autistic spectrum disorder, they tend to "dummy it up" more than necessary. Autistics aren't retarded by any stretch of the imagination. Claire Danes tried to do a good job, but the bottom line is that she over-dramatized Temple Grandin, from her voice to her facial expressions.
Watch any movie with a normal actor playing a developmentally disabled person, and you get the same thing. The closest portrayal I've ever seen that came across as relatively "real" was Mozart & the Whale. Worth seeing if you haven't seen it!
The "dummy up" factor is the primary reason my son (Aspie's) won't watch any of these kinds of movies. It's a shame, too, because many of them are otherwise inspirational and have messages worthwhile for autistic kids and adults. But who wants to watch a portrayal that makes you feel like velcro?
Temple Grandin (born August 29, 1947) is an animal medicine researcher, and is noted for her advocacy of animal welfare, and dealing with autism in humans (she suffers from Asperger's Syndrome and persevered in her education despite the challenges). She created a device called a "hug box" that uses mild pressure to calm agitated autistic children.
Temple Grandin. She portrays a scientist who becomes an advcate for autistics and the humane treatment of livestock.
Claire Danes won the 2009-10 award for her performance as the title character in "Temple Grandin" (HBO).
Skyler Day portrayed Claire on Pretty Little Liars
It's called "makeup". Claire Holt is an actress who portrayed a mermaid in a TV show. She is not really a mermaid, because mermaids do not really exist; she does not have gills, they were added for the show by a makeup/special effects team.
In the miniseries "Lonesome Dove," the character Claire is portrayed by the actress Patricia Gaul. She played the role of a strong and independent woman caught in a complicated romantic relationship with one of the main characters.
Violet is currently portrayed by Claire Engler.Claire Engler plays Violet.
Claire Danes won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress In A Mini-series or Motion Picture Made for Television in 2011 for Temple Grandin.
Jazz Raycole (The First Claire) departed after season one. It was publicly reported that she was pulled from the series by her mother over concerns about the second season opening storyline in which Raycole (as Claire) finds her friend Charmaine (portrayed by Raven-Symoné) has become pregnant.
