Thus you might tip a waiter who waits on you- but you are not gonna tip the person behind the register at McDonalds, because YOU are the one waiting in line.

You never HAVE to tip, although many restaurants will warn you on their menu that they automatically factor a tip in your bill...(usually for large parties only)... however, you are free to not eat at those establishments.

But be aware that in situations were workers rely on tips to make ends meet, that failure to tip can result in poor service.
