For some students it is the best possible school. I can't pretend to be objective because I have been on the faculty for 27 years, but I can say that when my sons' friends ask me about law school I tell them that if they are interested in the environment, justice, and legal learning that happens not only in the classroom, but in apprenticeships with wonderful lawyers and judges (that is one of the courses I teach), they should consider Vermont. There are distractions for students, but they involved hiking and skiing, trips to Montreal and working for Habitat for Humanity (these were not the distractions I had when I studied in Boston). We have never locked our house or our cars in all the years we have lived here and, while no place is perfectly safe, the Upper Valley is pretty darn good. EVERY student needs to think about debt, but thoughtful students who are willing to work part time (e.g. childcare for professors in the evenings - we are 40 minutes from Dartmouth and 90 minutes from Burlington), can often graduate with a manageable debt load. (see the Equal Justice Foundation website for good information about loans and public interest jobs).
