The Mason-Dixon Line is well above DC, which is the defacto North/South border line. However, reality is often more complicated than a straight line definition.

Although technically in the South, DC and the greater metropolitan area that includes Northern Virginia, and parts of Maryland has a northeastern urban appeal. Most residents would agree that the DC area feels closer to the North than the South in both its living conditions and sympathies.

Additionally many definitions of Northeastern/Mid-Atlantic states include DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware but the US Census classifies these areas as being the South Atlantic Region a member of the Southern United States.

Washington, D.C. is located in neither region. However, it is part of the BosWash corridor (Boston to Washington) which includes the cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and the District itself. D.C. is closest to the Northeast region compared to the Northwest.
