The best possible score on the SAT is a 2400, a score achieved by just hundreds of the more than a million students who take the SAT each year. The average SAT score is about 1540.
But what's a good SAT score? While many students and parents ask that question, there really isn't a great answer. A good score on the SAT is different for each student, and depends on where you want to go to college.
Here are some rough, unofficial estimates of the average SAT score at various schools. The average isn't necessarily the score you need to get into a college--there are plenty of factors other than SAT score at work, and by definition half of the students at any school are below the average. But it's a good ballpark figure if you're trying to decide whether your SAT score is good enough.
I want to say that compared to other people, that is not the best. Dont feel bad about yourself just retake it if you still can. I got a higher grade as a 7th grader than this but it could justve been that you had a bad day.

∙ 14y agoThe SAT is now out of 2400. Depending on the school this score may be considered decent or it can be considered not so great. It also depends on which sections you scored poorly on. Certain schools don't even look at the writing section so you may not be penalized for the score. If this were a score out of 1600, I would say this is a good score to apply to college with.

∙ 14y agoThat depends. If this score is out of 1600 (old SAT) then this is an excellent score to have. However, if this score is out of a 2400 (new SAT), then you need to try again, you won't really be very competitive with this score.

∙ 13y agoYes, it's a good score, but it depends on where you want to go to college. It's not high enough for an Ivy League school, or another top of the top school, but it's high enough to get you into most schools as long as you have good grades and extracurricular involvement. By the way, some schools (Wake Forest, for example) don't even require SAT scores, because they feel that standardized tests don't show the ability of their applicants accurately. Best of luck with your college search!

Middle 50% - 1830-2140 / 2400 or 1300-1400 / 1600
Average score on the 1600 scale is about 1000, so 970 is a bit below average.
1500-1600
1600
a 1200 is generally considered good, anything over 1400 is considered very good, 1600 is a perfect score
2005
of course!!! i only got a 1600 my first time, unfortunately, but i didnt prepare adequately enough.
According to the Prep Scholar website:The average SAT score composite at Purdue is a 1837 on the old 2400 SAT scale. On the new 1600 SAT, this corresponds to an average SAT score of 1300.
i think it is 1500/1600
Gates graduated from Lakeside School in 1973. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT.
I am a sophomore at GWU. I received a 1300/1600 and a 2120/2400 on my SATs but I am not sure that the university weighs the scores heavily when deciding upon an application.
If your talking about the old SAT which I think was given up until 2005 then yes 1300 is good score. The old SAT was out of 1600 and the average score was in the low 1000's I myself got a 1220 without a calculator. The new one takes into account a personal writing section which is kinda bogus. If your going by the old scale the average IVY leaguer I think the distribution was in the 1275-1560 range. So with a 1300 and decent grades you could probably get into a good second tier school, if you wanted to. Myself I recommend a public university unless you have some serious financial backup. Four years at most private colleges will run you 60-120 thousand. Depending on your major that could take you forever to pay off.
