Both. A wedding is legal no matter how or where it is performed. A christian wedding is just a wedding performed through the church because the christian belief is that God ordained marriage and it is done through the church - but it's still legal and binding as well.

Legalities of a Christian Wedding?

Every state has specific laws regarding who may legally officiate at a wedding even the person is a religious minister and the marriage is taking place in a Christian church. Before making the arrangements for your ceremony, you should check these requirements by contacting your county clerk’s office. If you feel that you are lacking the knowledge to make the correct decision, it is worth getting legal advice from a competent legal professional. For the most part, any licensed minister in regular communion with a Christian church of society of which he/she is a member may perform marriages. A certificate of marriage must be provided to the judge of probate within a specified amount of time (from 3 days to one month) after the marriage. A civil marriage, aside from the wedding ceremony, is a contractual agreement. It meets the state’s requirements so that the relationship between the spouses provides a basis for the exchange of property and recognition in the eyes of the law. On the other hand, a Christian marriage is a permanent covenant and sacrament with God at its center. A civil wedding unites the husband and wife before a legal authority, and friends and family. A Christian wedding binds the husband and wife in a union before God as well. The implication with a Christian marriage is that it lasts for a lifetime, and will be celebrated according to the Church’s teachings. Christian organizations expect lifelong relationships, characterized by monogamy, fidelity, mutual affection and respect, along with honest communication, and the love that enables each one to see in the other the image of God. Most religious congregations allow only Christian wedding to be performed in their denomination building. Clergy are often allowed to officiate at Christian weddings held in private homes, outdoor settings, at wedding/reception buildings. They may also perform a separate wedding to bless an original civil union. If the couple and ordained minister omit the civil element of the religious ceremony the marriage is considered invalid. At the end of the Christian wedding ceremony, the presiding clergyman, the husband and wife, and two witnesses must each sign the marriage register (certificate.) The couple should be certain the marriage register contains the correct details. It can be very difficult to make correction at a later time. This completed form must then be filed with the marriage registrar. Then a Marriage Certificate will be issued. This is your proof that you have undertaken a legal marriage ceremony.

Is there a relationship ceremony like a wedding but not?

Legally No. But I wanted to marry a man but not legally, i had a wedding ceremony and reception what i didn't have was a marriage license and a priest or justice of the peace or judge. Marriage in the religious sense is a commitment between you and your partner not a legal document. In some states such as Kansas what I did was considered Common Law Marriage. I also didn't have to pay a fortune for a divorce when it didn't work out.

What do you call the person who signs people in at a wedding?

The civil official at a wedding (the person legally conducting the ceremony) is the registrar. If you marry in church in a country which allows the combination of the civil and religious ceremony the priest is also the registrar. To be legal the marriage register has to be signed and witnessed and a marriage certificate issued. The registrar is responsible for this and for getting the bride, groom and witnesses to sign the register. The people helping the ceremony proceed (from the two families) are called the Ushers.
